Check out this amazing story from the early 1950's for Throwback Thursday..... It was 1950, post World War II, there was a drive to develop, to take advantage of abundant natural resources. And the Nechako-Kemano area had the energy, the Kitimat site fit the bill - thus, the Alcan Tunnel Project was developed! From 1951-1954 over 6,000 construction workers made it happen. The construction miners, a highly trained and skilled building group, used; moles, hydraulic and pneumatic drills, however, their safety was often compromised for production. Sadly, sixteen miners died between late 1951 and the spring of 1952, which led to the 15 day strike of 1952. A stark reminder that safety should be the #1 concern! #safetybeforeprofits #workplacesafety #kemano #miners #undergroundworker #kitimat #alcantunnel #tbt #union #labourer #constructionwork #liuna #local1611 #rockandtunnel #unionproud #solidarity #safetyintheworkplace . ...
