WHY SHOULD I JOIN LIUNA LOCAL 1611?
The best wages and conditions are won in workplaces where Union membership numbers are high. The reason for this, is that you are always in a stronger bargaining position if you stand together and negotiate as a group. Union set an industry standard wage.
WHY WOULD THE LOCAL 1611 BENEFIT ME?
By joining Local 1611, you will have the protection of a legally binding Contract, known as a Collective Agreement that is negotiated by the Union and voted on by you and your co-workers. As a member of the Union you and your co-workers are in a better position to negotiate with your employer as equals, and to protect your interests while you bargain over your wages, benefits, pension contributions, employer policies, schedules, work hours, job security, and a variety of other terms and conditions that are covered under the Collective Agreement.
ARE UNION DUES TAX DEDUCTIBLE?
YES, Union dues are tax deductible. You will receive a tax receipt for your dues at the end of each tax year.
WHO CAN JOIN LOCAL 1611?
Any active, skilled trades person who is a resident of British Columbia can apply for membership.
IS THERE ANY CRITERIA REQUIRED TO JOIN?
Local 1611 takes all applications into consideration. However, we assess each applicant for specific criteria. This is to ensure that we are taking on new members with industry skills that are in high demand by our Union contractors.
HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY APPLICATION WAS ACCEPTED?
We will contact those individuals whose applications we are accepting.
HOW LONG ARE APPLICATIONS KEPT?
We keep applications on file for at least six months.
IS THERE A FEE TO JOIN?
Yes, there is a one-time initiation fee which varies depending on which sector you will be working under.
WHAT DO MY UNION DUES PAY FOR?
Local 1611 operates almost solely on member dues. Dues are used to: represent members in negotiating strong Contracts, enforcing Contract rights, organizing new members to improve bargaining strength in existing workplaces, providing training and education for members, lobbying the government for legislation to protect and expand workers’ rights on the job, keeping members informed through newsletters and Union publications, maintaining this website, social sites and providing representation on WorkSafe, EI, and CPP issues, to name a few.
