We are sad to learn of the death of Jean Leahy in Fort St. John. Jean farmed in northeastern BC for decades and was the Women’s President of the National Farmers Union from 1975-1979. As President, Leahy provided leadership in the struggle for matrimonial property rights for women and pushed for legislation to allow farm women to contribute to the Canada Pension Plan. She argued for collective bargaining rights for farmers, including an effort to gain the right to bargain collectively for milk prices. The NFU initiated a boycott of Kraft Foods after the company refused to meet with the union. The boycott was supported by labour and urban groups and succeeded in raising awareness and education about problems faced by family farmers. Our condolences to her family, friends and comrades. The playground honouring the late West Shore Const. Sarah Beckett opened today, and I was pleased to attend along with many other community members, including Premier John Horgan. Cst. Beckett died in the line of duty when her police cruiser was struck by an impaired driver in 2016. “Sarah’s memory will live on through the laughter of children playing here,” said Insp. Todd Preston of the West Shore RCMP, who served as Master of Ceremonies for the event. The playground, at 3020 Glen Lake Road, was officially opened with a ribbon cutting by Const. Beckett’s husband and two children. Rotary Club of West Shore (Victoria, BC) is actively raising money for the Sarah Beckett Memorial Playground. Online donations are being accepted through their website at https://portal.clubrunner.ca/1897/stories/sarah-beckett-memorial-playground along with the option to purchase an engraved memorial brick for the playground. ... On this day, we're grateful for the strong women who came before us and fought for the rights of our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends. Women's rights are human rights, they're our collective rights and we stand together in the face of adversity for each other every day. But today we celebrate the accomplishments done to protect gender equality. #WomensEqualityDay ... See more
